Slide 1 — SMART Goal & Freshman On‑Track (FOT) Trend

FOT as the Leading Indicator for Literacy (CICS–Northtown)

  • SMART Goal (executed 2022–23): By Spring 2023, increase FOT from 94%99% via PLC + MTSS supports and translate gains into daily literacy moves across content areas.

Implementation Snapshot (SY22–23)
ILT/PLC Norms & Agenda Highlights
  • Equity of voice; “stories stay—practices go out;” honor decisions; stay rooted in purpose; present & engaged.
  • Debrief PLCs; non‑negotiable data cycle; achievement‑focused feedback; retake policy survey; STAR 360 scheduling/training.
9th Grade Culture & Climate — Non‑Negotiables
  • Relationship building; visible classroom norms; consistent tardy & cell phone policies.
  • Academic routines: Do Now and Exit Slip each period; attendance/tardy tracking; transitions.
  • Restroom protocol: sign‑out; one student at a time; no passes first/last 10 minutes.
Transparency: I have been on sabbatical from K‑12 since 2023 and do not claim credit for 2023–24 outcomes. 2024 campus data are used as external benchmarks for structures implemented in 2022–23.
Slide 2 — 3 Strategies that Drove Literacy

What worked (mapped to KIPP Texas)

1) PLC/ATLAS Weekly Cycle → Reteach Plan KFET 3.9

  • One focus standard; student‑work protocol; identify misconception patterns.
  • Next‑week reteach plan; assign “focus students” by teacher.
  • Calibration walks to align look‑fors across classrooms.
Texas alignment: TEKS HS ELA planning & analysis — §110.36–§110.39; KFET Teaching Cycle + Analysis & Action.

2) Exit Ticket → Next‑Day Reteach KFET 3.8

  • Daily digital exit tickets; pull small groups by skill gap.
  • Track small‑group minutes; log mastery gains.
  • Share quick data snapshot with families/advisory.
Texas alignment: TEKS assessment/feedback practices embedded in §110.36–§110.39; KFET 3.8 Assessment of Student Learning.

3) Text‑Dependent Questioning + Show‑Call KFET Teaching Cycle

  • Cold call + wait time + sentence stems to push evidence‑based responses.
  • Show‑call exemplar work; annotate for claim/evidence/reasoning.

Schoolwide supports: shared grade‑level lunch for case conferencing; protected MTSS block; common PLC time; advisory for goals and referrals.

Texas alignment: TEKS evidence‑based reading & writing routines (e.g., §110.36(c)(4), (6)–(8); parallels in §110.37–§110.39); KFET Culture + Teaching Cycle.
Slide 3 — High‑Level Communication

Vision & Stakeholder Communication (Texas Translation)

Families

This quarter we’re sharpening reading and writing in every class. You’ll see short daily checks for understanding and a quick reteach the next day when needed. Our 9th‑grade team (teachers, counselor, dean, and grade‑level admin) meets on a shared lunch to problem‑solve for students right away. We also run an advisory check‑in to set goals, track progress, and connect students to tutoring or counseling if needed.

We’ll share a brief update every two weeks with what we’re seeing and how we’re supporting students. If your student is flagged for extra support, you’ll receive a simple plan and regular check‑ins.

Questions or ideas? Please reach out—partnership with families is how we make classrooms consistent, joyful, and academically strong.

Leaders & Teachers (weekly cadence)

  • Monday PLC brief: focus standard (TEKS), 2 look‑fors (KFET), reteach plan, focus students.
  • Wednesday: coaching loop (observe → feedback → practice) for a bite‑size action step.
  • Friday Principal update: progress vs. target; celebrations; next‑week nudge.

Transferability: These strategies and structures map directly to TEKS + KFET for KIPP Texas.
